According to reports, the Election Commission of India has accepted Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM) party’s application for registration. Actor Kamal Haasan launched his party on February 21 this year at an event in Madurai. The EC has reportedly asked those who object the party’s registration to inform the Commission before May 31. Kamal Haasan, during the party launch event, also unveiled the party’s flag.
The application reportedly mentions Kamal Haasan as the president of the party. Further it mentions Gnanasambanthan as deputy president, Arunachalam as secretary and Suresh as treasurer.
To be eligible for registration, a party must be politically active for five continuous years. To be recognised as a state party, a party has to return at least one MLA for every 30 MLAs elected in the past assembly elections. Notably, the registration, among other benefits, entitles parties to accept any amount of contributions voluntarily offered to it by any person or company other than a government organisation.
