The policeman who was attacked by the drug peddler was part of the team of cops who cornered him at his hideout.
The deceased drug peddler has been identified as a 49-year-old man, Sankar who was involved in drug peddling in Ayanavaram as well as other parts of North Chennai. According to the data provided by police, Sankar was involved in four murders, four ‘attempt to murder’ cases and 29 ‘hurt and extortion’ cases.
The team of cops was led by inspector Natarajan. They went to the New Avadi Road area to catch the accused after receiving a specific tip- off.
“Sankar attacked a policeman named Mubarak and tried to escape. Immediately, the inspector opened fire at Sankar using his service pistol. Sankar was rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where doctors examined him and declared that was “dead on arrival,” Times of India reported.
The Ayanavaram police has registered a case and forwarded it for a magisterial inquiry as per the protocol in order to comply with the guidelines.
