According to Section 15(1), 15(3) and 15(4) of the new Motor Vehicle Act (MVA), driving licence holders hereafter will have to apply for renewal one year before or after the expiry date. If failed, they should undergo driving tests again.

The change will come into force in all Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) in Tamil Nadu soon as per TOI. The change has already come into effect at some RTOs in and around Vellore.

Under the old rules, people should apply for licence renewal 60 days before the expiry date by paying Rs.100. Even if failed, renewal applications were accepted for a period of five years from the expiry date with Rs.50 fine per year.
