While summer heat has not yet taken off in full swing, illegal water extraction is already booming in the Chennai’s southern suburbs with the Keelkattalai and Nanmangalam lakes becoming the heaven of the water mafia’s operations this year.
More than 70 tankers are reportedly operating in the area and around 25 lakh litres of water are being extracted and sold on a daily basis. What makes us worried is the fact that this could go on till the end of June end.
Tambaram Revenue Divisional officer S Chandrasekaran told TNIE that he would look into the issue and also work with Public Works and the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, to ensure that the illegal activity is nipped in the bud this summer.
