After 13 people were killed during the anti-Sterlite protest in Thoothukudi, founder and chairman of Vedanta Resources, Anil Agarwal in a video message stated that he was deeply saddened by the unfortunate turn of events. Protests have been taking place in Thoothukudi against Sterlite Copper, a subsidiary of Vedanta for more than 100 days. However, on the 100th day, protestors became victim to the police's gunfire.

Agarwal announced that the company is shut down at the moment due to annual shutdown and said, "We are waiting for clearance from the court and the government to restart the plant." He also added that Sterlite strictly follows the court and government's orders.

Agarwal claimed, "We always make sure the community and the Tuticorin people at large prosper with us. I am totally committed to the community and people at large, and with their wish and prosperity, we would like to continue this business," and assured that he will abide by the law of the land.
