The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has reportedly informed the Tamil Nadu government that it has chosen Madurai as the location to set up the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS). The prestigious institute will be set up at Thoppur in the city as suggested by the Tamil Nadu government.

The state government has to provide four-lane connectivity from the national highway, 20MVA power supply from two different feeders and adequate water supply. Further, the state should hand over the land and shift the Low Tension transformer L/T lines. Finally, an agreement is to be made with the Indian Oil Corporation on a pipeline passing through the site.

The state government had proposed Thoppur (Madurai), Sengipatti (Thanjavur), Pudukottai town, Chengalpattu (Kancheepuram) and Perundurai (Erode) for setting up the institute. Announcing the Centre’s decision at a public meet in Melur on Tuesday, Revenue Minister R B Udhayakumar said that the medical facility would benefit people from 15 districts around Madurai and also create job opportunities.
