According to reports, police have filed cases against DMK working president MK Stalin, MDMK general secretary Vaiko, VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan, TNCC president Su Thirunavukkarasar, state CPI(M) secretary K Balakrishnan and Makkal Needhi Maiam founder Kamal Haasan for visiting the Thoothukudi government hospital despite the clamping of section 144.
The leaders visited the hospital to meet the injured in the police firing in Thoothukudi which has killed at least 13 protesters so far. The leaders have reportedly been booked under three sections of Indian Penal Code for visiting the hospital without permission.
A violence broke out on Tuesday when people were protesting against the Sterlite copper plant demanding its closure. Stones were pelted against police personnel followed by a firing by police personnel. Initially, at least 11 persons were killed in the firing on Tuesday. Police also opened fire on Wednesday killing a youngster. The death toll rose to 13 after an injured died on Thursday.
