Home > Tamil Nadu news M Karunanidhi, DMK patriarch and five-time former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu passed away on Tuesday at Kauvery Hospital in the city around 6.10 pm.
Karunanidhi was admitted to the hospital last July 26 following urinary tract infection and was visited by several leaders of regional and national importance during his stay.
Born as Dakshinamurthy, Karunanidhi became Chief Minister of the state of Tamil Nadu for the first time in 1969 and has held the coveted office for five terms.
Not just politics, Kalaignar, a name bestowed upon him by late veteran actor MR Radha, is equally known for his screenwriting and literature works as well.
Karunanidhi is survived by his two wives, Rajathi Ammal and Dayalu Ammal and children M. K. Muthu, M. K. Alagiri, M. K. Stalin, M. K. Tamilarasu, M. K. Selvi and M. K. Kanimozhi.
