A school student drowned after falling into a newly constructed water tank inside a government school near Gingee in Villupuram district on Wednesday, say reports. The class VIII student, Sivaraman, of Raja Desingu Higher Secondary School fell into the tank when attempted to collect water from it.

The 13-year-old reportedly reached the school around 7.40 am and went to collect the water in a plastic vessel from the tank. However, he slipped and fell into the tank. Later a few students found his body in the tank alerted the teachers. Police rushed to the spot after receiving information.

They sent the body to the Government Medical College at Mundiyampakkam for an autopsy. The 10-ft deep tank was reportedly built near an under-construction building in the school premises. Police have arrested the contractor, in-charge of construction of a building in the premises, and his manager in connection with the death.
