COVID19 in Chennai: After Koyembedu, another Hot Spot Emerges in Chennai; Records exponential Rise in Cases!
Home > News Shots > Tamil Nadu newsPulianthope, an area that falls under ward 77 in Zone 6 ( Thiru-Vi-Ka Nagar) has recorded over 160 COVID-19 cases so far. This area alone has more cases than almost 10 other zones in Chennai.
The Special officer for the city, J Radhakrishnan on Monday addressed a media gathering and told that the ward has about 160 positive cases and is one of the largely affected areas of the city. Along with this area, neighborhoods in Royapuram too have recorded a high surge in number of cases over the past week.
As per Times of India’s report, this ward had recorded almost half of the positive cases in the city and it falls under the most affected zone which has reported 357 cases as of May 05.
Corporation Commissioner G Prakash confirmed the number and said that officials are now focusing on that ward and zone in particular and trying to curb the spread of the virus there.
As per media reports, many sanitary workers and staff working in that zone expounded that the lack of discipline among residents who gathered in containment areas and their failure to follow social distancing norms and warnings could be the reason behind the high number of cases reported in this area.
Reportedly, the initial cases were caused from members who attended a religious conference in Delhi. Last week, two sanitary workers took part in a prayer meeting in Asirvathapuram which was attended by almost 20 people and many tested positive.
“A resident of the zone, however said the onus lies with the authorities to ensure that they had communicated better with the residents to create awareness,” TOI highlighted in its report.
