11-year-old girl rape in Chennai: 17 arrested attacked in court complex

According to reports, 17 men, who were arrested for allegedly raping an 11-year-old hearing impaired girl in Chennai, were attacked in the Madras High Court complex. A group of lawyers attacked them after police produced the accused before the Mahila Court in the complex. The accused were attacked when police took them out to send them to Puzhal prison.

Video clips on television channels showed the accused thrashed and kicked by lawyers, who were seen enraged. The Mahila Court ordered judicial custody for the accused till July 31.

The 17 men were arrested on Monday for allegedly raping the class 7 student at her apartment complex for over six months. The girl’s mother came to know about the cruelty meted out to her daughter after the girl complained of stomach pain to her elder sister on July 13. The mother filed a complaint with the police.

In the complaint, she had told that her daughter was even gang-raped at times. The accused had allegedly videotaped the rape and threatened the girl. They gave her spiked soft drinks. The arrested include a plumber, security guards, and housekeeping staff in the same apartment.
