Hima Das, the first Indian athlete to win a gold medal at the IAAF World Under-20 Athletics Championships, has thanked the nation for the overwhelming support. She uploaded a selfie video on her Twitter account, in which she said, “I’ve come this far because of the love the people gave me.” She thanked President Ram Nath Kovind and PM Narendra Modi for congratulating her over the victory.


Hima from Assam scripted history after she clinched a gold medal in the women's 400m final race in Tampere, Finland on Thursday. She also became the first female athlete to win a gold medal in a World Championship at any level, be it youth, junior or senior.


Hima clocked 51.46 seconds to claim the gold to become the first Indian to have won a gold in a track event at the world level. Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has announced a reward of Rs 50 lakh for the 18-year-old.
