Home > News Shots > Sports newsThe much awaited Tokyo Olympics 2020, which was scheduled to begin from July 24, has been postponed amid the coronavirus pandemic. One of the International Olympic Committee's (IOC) member said it has been decided that the Tokyo Olympics will be postponed.
As per a USA TODAY Sports report, veteran IOC member Dick Pound announced that the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games are going to be postponed amid the deadly coronavirus pandemic which has claimed more than 16,000 lives.
During a telephonic interview, Pound said “on the basis of information, postponement has been decided. The parameters going forward have not been determined, but the games are not going to start on July 24, that much I know.”
Pound, who is one of the most influential members of the IOC further stated that the games will likely be moved to 2021. More information regarding this will be worked out in the next four weeks. “It will come in stages. We will postpone this and begin to deal with all the ramifications of moving this, which are immense," he further added.
Earlier in the week, Canada became the 1st country to announce that it is pulling out of the Games if they are held as scheduled amid Covid-19 outbreak. Days later, Australia too decided not to send athletes to Tokyo.
