Batting first, Chennai Super Kings got off to a steady start scoring 57/1 in the power-play. CSK batsman Shane Watson - 36 (25), Faf Du Plessis - 27 (15), Suresh Raina - 31 (26), and Ambati Rayudu - 21 (17) got off to a start but failed to score big. CSK captain MS Dhoni holded the innings together with his unbeaten 43 runs off just 25 balls to take CSK to 177/5. KKR spinner Sunil Narine picked up 2 wickets in the innings.
