Indian cricket fans were subjected to turmoil after MS Dhoni was caught on camera taking the match ball from the umpire after the end of the ODI series against England. India lost the series, following which Dhoni took back the match ball.

Dhoni taking the ball sparked rumours of the former skipper's retirement. The rumours were, however, dismissed by the Chief Coach Ravi Shastri, who told TOI that Dhoni was just taking the ball to show it to the coach. Shastri said, "MS wanted to show the ball to Bharat Arun. He wanted to show him the wear and tear the ball had endured, to get a general idea of what the conditions were like."

Shastri confirmed that Dhoni is an asset to India and is not leaving anywhere.
