The Karnataka High Court is set to rule today on the hijab issue. Following this, the Karnataka Police has imposed a number of restrictions on the public, including those not allowed in public places.

Hijab affair

A few weeks ago, an allegation arose that the college administration did not allow students wearing hijab to enter a college in Udupi, Karnataka. Within a few days there were protests all over Karnataka in this regard. Some students came to the college wearing khawi pieces to protest the students wearing hijab.

As the matter escalated, the state chief minister Basavaraj Bommai had given holidays to schools and colleges across the state.

Case

Following this, Islamic students from Udupi area lodged a complaint in the court. The students had stated in their petition that the government's decision would rob them of religious freedom granted by the political system. The Karnataka government has argued in court that the decision was made because all students are required to wear only a uniform.

11 day trial

The case was heard by Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Ritu Raj Aswathy, Justices Krishna Dixit and JM Ghazi. After hearing the arguments of the students and the Government of Karnataka, the court will give its verdict in the case today.

Restrictions

The Karnataka High Court has been hearing the hijab case for the past 11 days. Following this, the Karnataka Police has imposed various restrictions to maintain public order and law and order.

A statement issued by the Bangalore Police Commissioner Kamal Bandh said, "All gatherings, protests or celebrations in Bangalore will be banned for one week from tomorrow (March 15) to March 21."

As a precautionary measure, the police have imposed a number of restrictions as the Karnataka High Court is set to rule today on the hijab case, which has caused a stir across India.
