In a case of medical apathy, a woman gave birth to a girl-child on a state highway in Madhya Pradesh's Burhanpur city.

The woman has been identified as Kamla Bai, who went into labour while her husband was taking her to the hospital on a motorcycle on Friday.

Hours after waiting for the 'Janani Express' ambulance that allegedly failed to arrive for taking the pregnant woman to the hospital; without much of a choice the husband took Kamla to the hospital on a motorcycle.

According to ANI news agency, Chandra Bai, mother-in-law of the woman said that "we informed the ANM (Auxiliary Nurse Midwife) about the labour pain and asked for an ambulance to take her to the hospital. However, the ambulance never arrived. She went into labour on the road and gave birth to a girl."

But sadly, the woman gave birth to the child even before they could reach the hospital.

After the delivery, Kamla was later taken to Shahpur Community Health Centre where the doctors attended the mother and the newborn, ANI further reported.

Meanwhile, when media contacted duty nurse Hansali Baghail, she said that "the relatives claim that she delivered the baby on the road. They came with the newborn in their hands. We attended them. Both the mother and children are healthy."
