The Supreme Court while hearing a 20-year-old woman's plea to abort her foetus over marital discord and a desire to start divorce proceedings, ruled saying that abortion is equal to murder and denied the woman permission to go ahead with the act.
Under Indian laws, women who carry foetus over 25-weeks old can abort them only when the mother's condition is in dire straits or if the child is likely to have severe physical/mental deformities.
The panel of judges also advised the woman saying that she is likely to regret her choice in case she reconciles with her husband.
