According to a World Health Organisation report, smoking tobacco in India has significantly reduced. The report released on Thursday stated that smoking in India was 19.4 percent in 2000, which reduced to 11.5 percent in 2005. The report suggested that the rate will reduce to 9.8 percent in 2020 and to 8.5 percent in 2025.
However, the report did not contain statistics of chewing tobacco users. According to reports, 3/4th of the total tobacco users in India consume it in the chewable form.
Despite the reduction in numbers, India still stands second in the world's highest consumers of tobacco. Reportedly, India contributes to 106 million of the 1.1 billion smokers in the world. China comes first and Indonesia comes third in the list.
