A report by the United Nations Refugee Agency has revealed that around 7400 people from India sought asylum in US in 2017. The report also said that US remained the top choice for those seeking asylum as the country received the most number of applications.


About 68.5 million people were displaced globally by the end of 2017, the agency’s annual Global Trends report said. At the end of 2017, India had 197,146 refugees and 10,519 asylum seekers with pending cases, it added. According to the report, there were about 40,391 asylum seekers from India at the end of the year.


Afghan nationals had filed a whopping 124,900 applications seeking asylum in 80 different countries.
