This School Book's Definition of A 'Modern Girl' Has Invited The Wrath Of Social MediaHome > India news
The Oxford Dictionary defines 'modern people' as "a person who advocates or practices a departure from traditional styles or values." While the definition might vary, all of us get the idea of a modern girl - smart, beautiful, independent and outgoing.
But an Indian school book seems to have a different idea.
A social media user brought light of a book on 'Current Essays and Letters', written by Purabi Chakraborty, that defines a 'modern girl' will all the stereotypes that one can think of. Take a look
What a disgusting definition of modern girl! Students should unlearn this if already they have learned from the book. pic.twitter.com/MONJdSFbkh— taslima nasreen (@taslimanasreen) August 21, 2018
The book, supposedly intended for CBSE and ICSE students, bashes the modern girl by referring to her as a "creature". "The modern girl is no longer a shy, obidient and homely creature as she used to be. She claims for her rights as she wants to enjoy life like the boys. She is more a self-centered creature, than a loving daughter or sympathetic creature."
The book goes on to compare men and women, by claiming that the girl tries to 'imitate men'. The book also claims that the modern girl has "no time to look after the needs of other family members."
And then it all went downhill. Twitterati were quick to slam the 'disgusting' definition. Here are some reactions
This is the kind of shit that is being fed to children in our country approaching the most important years in their lives - when they start forming opinions and see the world in a different light.— Souvik Roy Chowdhury (@souvikrc) August 23, 2018
Really surprised to see that this has been authored by a lady! pic.twitter.com/AnDqtVwjAO
Unbelievable. India’s “modern girl” here sounds like a throwback to the West’s pre-1950s and way less “modern” than India’s freedom-fighter women in the years before 1947. https://t.co/CVubRRxSAa— Mira Kamdar (@mirakamdar) August 23, 2018
This is our education standard, i think even an 'uneducated' sane person will write a better essay.— Parikshit Paul (@ParikshitPaul16) August 21, 2018
Looks like I'm reading a diary entry of someone who time travelled from 30BC, anxious like an early man would be at seeing the world of today !— Shivani Nair (@shivani131102) August 23, 2018
If the girls have started thinking/caring abt them it's because they're educated! Not because they're illmannered#Getyourfactsright
