Shalini, a widow had been living with her two children in Pathanapuram, Kerala. Reportedly Shalini was talking to a male relative on the day of the brutal assault. Her conversation with the man was being watched by another relative of hers who brought 3 other goons and questioned them.

Within minutes the goons had broken into Shalini's house and assaulted her physically, further injuring her head and eye. She was admitted to the Pathanapuram Taluk hospital for treatment while the local police filed an FIR against the 4 goons for the moral policing, harassment and violence.

Later the four accused men were identified as - Vineeth, Vinod, Anu and Dileep by the local police. The police have filed a case under non-bailable sections of IPC, including section 354 ( assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty).

Reportedly Shalini had been employed in domestic work to feed her family and some of her neighbours made false claims that random men were visiting her house.

“Some neighbours of mine are creating a lot of trouble for me by making false claims that random men were visiting my house. I have to stay in my house with my children. I have a daughter. If I am being attacked so much, I have no guarantee that tomorrow these people will not tear apart my daughter,” Shalini told the local media as reported by TNM.
