The Supreme Court on Tuesday reportedly allowed the Union government to proceed with reservations in the promotion of government employees belonging to the SC/ST category.
The apex court’s vacation bench was quoted as saying, “We will say you (Centre) can go ahead with promotion as per law and we will not mention what [the] law is”. The order is effective until the Constitution bench of the top court disposes of the matter, reports said.
The Centre submitted before the bench that the process of promotions has come to a ‘standstill’ due to the various verdicts passed by High Courts of Delhi, Bombay and Punjab and Haryana on the issue. The government also said that the top court also passed different orders on appeals filed against those verdicts.
