A five-judge Constitution bench of the Supreme Court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi delivered one of the most anticipated verdicts on the Ram Janmabhoomi - Babri Masjid title suit today. The Supreme Court allotted alternate land to Muslims for mosque, meaning that a Ram Temple can be established on the disputed site.

In the judgement, the court read, "Law must stand apart over political considerations, religion and beliefs. It is inappropriate for the Supreme Court to enter into the area of theology, true test is faith and belief of worshippers of mosque. ASI report that concludes Babji Masjid was not constructed on vacant land cannot be ignored. There is a structure underlying and that structure is not an Islamic structure."

"Titles can't be decided on faith and belief but on the claims, Historical accounts indicate the belief of Hindus that Ayodhya was the birthplace of Lord Ram. Once faith is established, courts should defer to it."

The bench, also comprising justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and SA Nazeer wrapped-up a 40-day hearing on October 16 and reserved the judgement.

Earlier, CJI Ranjan Gogoi also met top officials of the Uttar Pradesh government, including chief secretary Rajendra Kumar Tiwari and director general of police (DGP) Om Prakash Singh to assess the situation in Ayodhya.

To tighten the security, the MHA has deployed around 4,000 paramilitary personnel across Uttar Pradesh. Internet services have been halted and temporary jails have also been created.

Later, PM Narendra Modi tweeted, "The Supreme Court of the country has pronounced its verdict on Ayodhya. This decision should not be seen as a victory or defeat of anyone."

"This decision of the Supreme Court is important for several reasons: It shows how important is to follow the legal process in resolving a dispute. Each side was given enough time and opportunity to present its arguments. The temple of justice resolved the decades-old case amicably."
