A group of Nihangs (Sikhs armed in weapons and dressed in traditional clothes) allegedly attacked cops and chopped off an Assistant sub- inspector's hands with sword. The incident happened on Sunday when the police were checking all the vehicles at a police outpost in Sanaur vegetable market in Punjab’s Patiala district. The scuffle commenced when the group of men entered the mandi market without curfew passes. When the police intervened, a cop’s hand was cut and two other cops were injured.

After attacking the police officers, the group of men fled to Gurudwara Khichri Sahib and were being chased by a team of cops. When the police conducted investigations in and around the areas of the Gurudwara, they found intoxicants, arms and cash. After carrying out a manhunt, the police managed to get hold of the alleged attackers. 0ne of them were attacked during the exchanges with police and hence was taken to the hospital. As per the reports by Tribune, two members denied to cooperate and hurled religious slogans. They were taken to Crime Investigation Agency’s office for interrogation. SSP Sidhu said to The Times of India that a case under the relevant sections of the law has been registered and efforts were on to arrest the four accused.

ASI Harjeet Singh, whose hand was chopped off, was immediately taken to Rajindra Hospital.  “I have spoken to doctors at PGI and the surgery of ASI Harjeet Singh has already started. Police have registered attempt to murder case against the accused. This behavior is highly condemnable and strictest action is being taken”, said Preneet Kaur, Lok Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) from Patiala in a tweet posted at 11:21 am today. 

Incidents like these throw light on the risks frontline workers are exposed to during the lockdown. As of today, Punjab has registered 135 confirmed cases of COVID- 19 and 11 deaths.
