Petrol prices spiked once again this morning and reached a new height ever in Chennai. While the petrol rate was Rs 79.47 yesterday, it increased yet again today by 32 paise. The maximum rate Chennai has seen was in 2013 when the rate was Rs 79.55. Today that record was smashed as the petrol prices surged to a whopping Rs 79.79.

As of Monday, the nation saw the eighth consecutive hike in petrol and diesel prices in the four metropolitan cities - Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai and Chennai. Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has reportedly assured that the government will take steps to maintain the prices.

Due to the price hike, industry chambers like FICCI and Assocham have urged the government to reduce excise duty for fuel. The government has also been asked to bring automobile fuel under GST.
