The top court of India will declare the verdict today on whether to spare the lives of the four convicts sentenced to death in the Nirbhaya rape case. The four men were given the death sentence for raping and torturing a 23-year-old medical student on a bus in Delhi in 2012.
However, a review plea was filed by three of the four convicts to reduce their death sentence to life imprisonment. A bench containing Chief Justice Dipak Mishra and Justices R Banumathi and Ashok Bhushan will review the convicts' plea.
The men had reportedly appealed to the SC stating that it was "cold-blooded killing in the name of justice." The SC then agreed to hear the plea on November last year.
