Rainfall peaked on Wednesday when cyclonic winds with the speeds of up to 107 kmph hit the city and all neighboring areas. Suburban train and bus services and all offices remain shut except for essential services. Chief Minister of Maharashtra Uddhav Thackeray has requested citizens not to venture out unless it is absolutely necessary to do so.

The weather department has issued warning that heavy to very heavy rainfall as well as strong winds are likely to prevail. "Mumbai city and suburbs are very likely to receive few spells of moderate to heavy rainfall (1-2 cm/hour) during next 3-4 hours accompanied with strong winds reaching 60-70 kmph occasionally gusting to 80 kmph. During next 3-4 hours. Possibility of thunder/lightning in some areas," the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) tweeted.

However, the silver lining here is the weather department’s announcement regarding rainfall. "Next 24 hours could see gradual decrease in intensity of rainfall in city," said KS Hosalikar, Director General of Meteorology.

Heavy rainfall has also affected areas along the Maharashtra-Karnataka border and the Konkan region, including Goa. In Kerala too warning has been given for heavy rainfall. The IMD said "very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall" is expected till August 9. It has warned of heavy rains specifically in Wayanad and Kozhikode.

“The National Disaster Response Force and Railway Protection Force rescued 290 passengers from two local trains stranded on flooded tracks between the CSMT and Sandhurst Road station on Wednesday,” NDTV reported.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave assurance on Wednesday that all possible support to Maharashtra Chief Minister with respect to the situation in Mumbai, will be extended.
