Last Wednesday on June 12, five Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel were martyred in a terror attack, the responsibility of which was taken by the Pakistan-based terror group Al Umar Mujahideen.
Meanwhile, two terrorists were also killed in the encounter. Hours before Major Ketan Sharma took on militants in the Anantnag encounter, the officer sent a photo of himself on the family WhatsApp group and said, "Maybe this is my last photo", reports India Today.
Later in the day, family members of the 29-year-old were visited by Army officers who informed them that Major Ketan Sharma had succumbed to his injuries sustained in a gunfight in south Kashmir.
According to reports, his cousin said that after receiving the message, Major’s wife and his brother-in-law tried to get in touch with him but there was no response. The entire city of Meerut mourned the death of this braveheart when he was brought home early Tuesday morning. His father, Ravinder, told The Indian Express, "He always asked me to take care of his mother since she is unwell."
Home Minister, Rajnath Singh also paid tribute to the 29-year-old, Major Ketan Sharma who had left a well-paying job in Gurugram to join the army. A cousin told The Indian Express "He grew up in the cantonment area and was always inclined towards armed forces.”
Media reports states that, Sharma got through the Combined Defence Services exam and became a Lieutenant in 2012. He had a daughter with his wife Era, who he married after becoming the Lieutenant.
Currently, the UP government announced a 25 lakh ex-gratia for his family and promised government jobs to the members of his family. The government is also going to name a road after this braveheart.
