Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, after his meeting with Union Aviation Minister Suresh Prabhu on Saturday, said that Kannur International Airport will begin operations in September. Kerala is the only state to have four international airports in India. Suresh Prabhu was quoted as saying that the Centre will prove all possible help to make the airport operations in September.


Kerala already has Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode international airports. The new airport will be set up in Mattanur near Kannur in 2,000 acres at a cost of Rs 1,892 crore. It is also reported that the facility can handle 2,000 passengers at a time and serve 1.5 million international passengers annually.


The Chief Minister said that the Union Minister assured of sorting out all the issues regarding operations of foreign airlines at the airport. Once set up, the airport will boost tourism and business activities in north Kerala, reports added.
