Popular Actress-Turned-Politician Booked For Sedition Over Tweet Calling PM Narendra Modi A 'Thief'

Actor-turned-politician, and Congress social media chief Divya Spandana, has been booked for sedition, over a tweet, calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi a "thief".

She has been booked under Section 124-A of IPC and Section 67 of the Information Technology (Amendment) Act.

The FIR, filed by lawyer Syed Rizwan Ahmed, states that Spandana tweeted an "utterly insulting" post against the PM. The tweet showed a photoshopped image of PM Modi painting the word "chor" (thief) on the forehead of his own wax statue.

The tweet is in connection with the Congress' stand over the past couple of days, calling the PM a "thief" over the Rafale deal row.

The FIR states that Spandana's tweet gave rise to "hatred" against the Prime Minister - a democratically elected leader of the country - and defamed him. The post made fun of the country at an international platform, the FIR added.

Lawyer Syed Rizwan Ahmed claimed that he raised a complaint with the police after Spandana refused to remove the post. He has also urged people to support a man named Vibhor Anand, who wants to file a Rs. 10,000 crore civil defamation case against Spandana. Vibhor has also threatened to make Congress President Rahul Gandhi a party in the case.
