Probe ordered after photo of dead woman carried on garbage cart goes viral

A probe was ordered after a photo of a dead elderly woman carried on a garbage cart went viral on social media. The photo shows the body wrapped in a polythene bag and carried on a garbage cart in Odisha. Reportedly, the cart belonged to the local municipality.

The unidentified woman on June 1 had been lying dead on the roads for some time after which the locals took her to the hospital. Reportedly, even after 72 hours, nobody came to claim her body. Her body was handed over to the municipality which in turn,  handed it over to an agency to take care of the disposal. It was the agency members who carried her body on the garbage cart.

The viral photo led to the municipal officials to order a probe. An officer reportedly said, "We would probe the incident to find out how the body was being carried in the garbage trolley as alleged."
