According to reports, a sweeper in Bengaluru committed suicide by consuming pesticide on Sunday due to poverty since he had not been paid his salary for seven months. S Subramani, the 40-year-old, was working as a contract employee with Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for 18 years.
However, his job was said to have been “regularised” as BBMP in January, say reports. While he was receiving Rs 14,000 as salary by December 2017, his pay was said to be increased to 17,100 after his regularisation.
But, BBMP Commissioner Manjunath Prasad said the sweeper was one of the 3,000-odd employees in “excess” of the 18,300 on the rolls of BBMP whose salaries were to be paid off and then relieved, reports added.
