Jawan kills officer and injures two for denying wedding leave

In a fit of rage, a 26-year-old Assam Rifles jawan who was on election duty in West Bengal's Howrah district today allegedly opened fire at a poll camp that claimed a life of a colleague and injured two others in the act.

The jawan has been identified as Lakshmikant Barman who fired 13 rounds at the camp set up in a school in Bagnan area of the district.

According to NDTV reports, a senior police officer said "The jawan was reportedly depressed and had been unwell for quite some time. As per our information, Barman was taken off duty. Assistant Sub-Inspector Bholanath Das was killed in the shooting, while two other personnel, Anil Rajbanshi and Rantu Mani are injured. The police said the two injured jawans are undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Times of India (ToI) reports further state that the immediate flashpoint appeared to be denial of leave for his wedding on May 20. Soon after the firing, the jawan tired to flee from the place but was over powered by his other staff and was handed over to the police for further investigations.
