To aid the tax payers, the income tax department has allowed Aadhaar card holders to use the biometric id instead of PAN number.

Aadhaar card holders may be fined Rs.10,000 for making mistakes in IT form

However, giving an incorrect Aadhaar number might make one pay Rs.10,000 as fine. The Income Tax Act 1961's latest amendment not only allows to use Aadhaar number but also adds fine for giving false data.

However, it is only applicable when one is using Aadhaar instead of PAN where PAN is mandatory for filing IT returns, etc.

According to the rules, one will be fined if one gives invalid Aadhaar number instead of PAN or if one fails to provide either number in transactions. Also one needs to authenticate the biometric identity. Giving wrong number in two forms will lead to doubling up the fine.
