Home > News Shots > Business newsAs a major boost to the government's Make In India campaign, one of the world’s largest companies - Apple has started manufacturing one of its flagship devices, the iPhone 11, at Chennai’s Foxconn plant.
Yes, you heard it right- this is the first time Apple has manufactured a top-of-the-line model in India. This news went viral after Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad lauded the move, hailing it as an affirmation of the government’s push towards an “Atmanirbhar Bharat”.
As per sources, this plan was taken up possibly paving the way for Apple's top-of-the-line devices becoming available in India at lower prices and because this precludes the hefty customs duties levied on them. Meanwhile, with this big move - it can be the beginning of a new era for Apple, which is preparing to begin manufacturing its newly launched iPhone SE (2nd Generation) of handsets in India.
According to a LiveMint report, the Cupertino-based tech giant had started planning and assembling the iPhone XR in India in 2019. In 2017, Apple had also started the domestic manufacturing of the Apple iPhone SE 2016 in the Bangalore plant.
Apple also has plans to make the iPhone SE 2020 in India in its Wistron plant near Bangalore, which can be an added factor to the city and country.
Meanwhile weeks earlier, Foxconn, which is a leading supplier for Apple had planned to invest up to $1 billion to expand its India factory where it assembles iPhone models.
