The United Nations Sustainable Development Solutions Network annually publishes the World Happiness Report. The report is what it sounds; it measures the happiness of the citizens in each country. The first World Happiness Report was released on April 1, 2012. Last week, the UN announced the list for 2017. So, let's look at the top 10 countries with happiest citizens.
As of the 2017 report, Norway is the overall happiest country in the world. Quick fact: Norway was ranked as the fourth happiest country for the last two years.
Denmark was the one who lost the title to Norway. Denmark has won the title three of the four times.
The Nordic island nation, Iceland was awarded the third place this year. As most of the population lives in the capital, Reykjavik, which runs on geothermal Icelanders have one more reason to be happy.
Switzerland drops from the second to fourth position. Reason: Close competition between the top four nations
Finland, which was also known as the land of lakes comes in at the fifth place. Finland was awarded the same spot last year.
Netherlands, the country famous for Van Gogh, Tulips and Canals comes in the sixth position.
With vast swaths of wilderness, Canada comes in the seventh place. However, this is Canada's worst ranking since 2012. It was ranked sixth last year
The Eight position was awarded to the country sitting below Australia. New Zealand has maintained the eighth position for the second time in a row.
The land of the Great Barrier Reef is tied for the ninth place with Sweden. Australia gets to keep the same position despite the environmental threat to the Great Barrier Reef.
There is no tenth space. Reason: two nations have been tied for the ninth place. The second one of them is Sweden.
