In the recent 2016 elections, Kalaignar won from Thiruvarur constituency against ADMK candidate with a victory margin of 68,366 votes.
In 2006, Karunanidhi contested from Chepauk constituency and defeated an Independent candidate with a victory margin of 8,523 votes, while in 2011, he fought from Thiruvarur constituency and defeated an ADMK candidate with a victory margin of 50,249 votes.
Karunanidhi contested from Chepauk constituency in both 1996 and 2001 elections. He defeated Congress candidates with victory margins of 35,784 votes and 4,834 votes respectively.
Kalaignar, who contested from Harbour constituency in both 1989 and 1991 elections, defeated Muslim League and ADMK candidates with victory margins of 31,991 votes and 890 votes respectively.
In both the 1977 and 1980 elections, Karunanidhi defeated ADMK candidates from Anna Nagar constituency with victory margins of 16,438 votes and 699 votes respectively.
In 1967 and 1971, Kalaignar contested from Saidapet constituency and defeated the Congress candidates with victory margins of 20,482 votes and 12,511 votes respectively.
In 1957, Karunanidhi contested from Kulithalai constituency in his debut elections and defeated the Congress candidate with a victory margin of 8,296 votes. In 1962, the DMK stalwart contested from Thanjavur constituency and defeated the Congress candidate with a victory margin of 2,828 votes.
