If you had been a 90s kid fond of the comics, you would be familiar with the many exploits of Shikari Shambu, the fictional coward hunter, whom the world perceives to be courageous. Every time, he tries to run away from wild animals, luck favours him and he ends up looking like a hero. The Malayalam movie 'Shikkari Shambhu' tells the story of three fraudsters - Peeli (Kunchacko Boban) and his friends Shaji (Hareesh) and Achu (Vishnu Unnikrishnan), who come to a small village in Kerala to hunt down a man-eating tiger posing as hunters.

Directed by Sugeeth, the movie is a comedy-drama with Sshivada and Alphonsa playing the lead ladies. Nishad Koya's screenplay has many light moments that shine brightly especially due to the humour handled by Hareesh, but there are many negatives as well. The screenplay is loose and does not excite at regular intervals. A sequence where the tiger is getting ready to attack a kid is an example of logic taking a strong blow to its face. Sugeeth who made a promising debut with 'Ordinary' starring Kunchacko and Biju Menon, seems to have a hangover with Shikkari Shambhu sporting many characters that were seen in his previous films.

Kunchacko Boban convincingly carries the lead character on his shoulders. Vishnu Unnikrishnan, who had done a great job in Kattappanayile Rithik Roshan, does a decent job as the supporting hero, but at times finds it hard to break free from the shadows of his previous role. Hareesh is the biggest positive of the film as he is responsible for a big percentage of the bone tickling humour.

Cinematography by Faisal Ali is decent and succeeds in showing the beauty of a village close to the forest, but the colour grading in songs seems out of tune. Music by Sreejith Edavana is average and does not have tunes that follow you even after you leave the cinema hall.

Verdict: Shikkari Shambhu has a few funny moments but could have been better with a stronger plot.
