Vatta Parambath Sathyan aka V P Sathyan was a former Indian footballer who captained the Indian National Team from 1991 to 1995. Named the 'Player of the Year' in 1995 by All India Football Federation, V P Sathyan led the Indian team to a Gold Medal in SAF Games, Chennai. The film "Captain" is a biographical sports-drama based on his life.
Written and directed by Prajesh Sen, versatile actor Jayasurya plays the title role while Anu Sithara plays Anitha Sathyan, V P Sathyan's wife. The film is a visual window into the life of the Indian Captain who was born to V P Gopalan Nair and Narayani Amma, married to Anitha and had a daughter named Athira. Captain is about V P Sathyan's personal life, his struggles, depression and finally, death.
The director has used non linearity, in the screenplay that mainly focuses on Sathyan's battles outside the football ground. Jayasurya's performance is of top notch quality. He succeeds in inducing the pain on screen, that the legendary footballer had to go through in real life. With her poised performance, Anu Sithara has supported him beautifully. The supporting cast of Renji Panicker, Siddique and Deepak Parambol, don't succeed in creating an unconventional and individualistic impact. A better-worked character inclusion in the screenplay would have supported the film on a whole, in a better way.
While the director has succeeded in creating some good and powerful scenes, he has also missed out on a few. While some scenes show his calibre, some shed light on his drawbacks. The screenplay lacks that x-factor and heavily relies on the background score to create goosebumps. Cinematography by Roby Varghese Raj is good, on and off the football ground.
Gopi Sunder has once again worked his magic and his background score and music are what lifts Captain up, along with Jayasurya's strong performance.
