Story: Michael Waldron

Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse Of Madness is a film written by Michael Waldron and directed by Sam Raimi. It has Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role, while Elizabeth Olsen, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez and others play crucial roles. The film is the 28th film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It is produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.

America Chavez has the power to travel between various universes aka the multiverse, and she is being hunted down by a demon. Dr. Strange and Wong save her, but when Dr. Strange tries to find out the root cause of all this, it leads them to bigger problems. Whether Strange saves America Chaves, or does the demon succeed in getting what it wanted forms the rest of the plot.

It has been more than 5 years since the last standalone Doctor Strange film released and all that can be said about the film is that the fans are in for a delight. With a proper mix of horror, fantasy, action and other genres, the film is packaged tightly to satisfy fans, and also to make sure that the first time Marvel movie viewer isn't alienated. In short, the film doesn't depend just on the references from previous Marvel films.

Benedict Cumberbatch is in top form as usual, and also gets the best punchlines. However, Elizabeth Olsen as Scarlet Witch steals the show in every scene of hers. The emotional breakdown near the climax is pulled off with superb conviction and it elevates the scene to a great extent. Benedict Wong as Wong and Rachel McAdams as Christine also chip in with useful contributions.

Another strong element in the film is the visual effects. Be it the Octopus Monster in the first fight sequence, or the travel through the multiverse, the effects make sure to leave your mouth wide open in disbelief. There are easily 4-5 sequences in the film where the actors don't do anything significant but just the VFX gets the applause. The face-off scenes between Wanda Maximoff/Scarlet Witch and Dr. Strange are easily the best ones.

Technically, Danny Elfman's exhilarating background score provides the film with some much needed impetus. Wherever the screenplay dips, Danny comes to the rescue. We can also call his score the spine of the film. We all know that the cinematography and visual quality will be top notch in Marvel films. But here cinematographer John Mathieson's camera movements are smooth and innovative. There is a shot of Strange repairing his watch. The angle from which the scene is shot is the kind of innovation John brings to the table.

Overall, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness gives the fans everything and more than what they asked for. It is very hard for a film with such expectations to deliver something above it. And the film does it with consummate ease. It also satisfies and engages the general audience to a great extent. A must watch commercial entertainer.
