Ram Gopal Varma’s ‘Climax’ is his latest venture in the OTT world, which stars adult film actress Mia Malkova in the lead. The 52-minute movie is touted to be a horror-thriller shot in broad daylight. Has it delivered to the expectations? Read more to find out.

‘Climax’ begins in a desert, where a couple is spotted going on a trip. They ignore a disclaimer that goes ‘Do not Enter’. The incidents that happen during the trip form the crux of the story.

‘Climax’ marks Mia Malkova’s second venture with RGV, following ‘God, Sex and Truth’. There’s not much to complain about her performance in this horror movie. The only concern would be the dubbing and lip-sync, which tend to be very artificial at times, thus failing to set the thriller mood for the audience. The nuances in her expressions do not create enough tension required for a thriller.

On the technical front, the cinematographers deserve some credit for some brilliant angles in which a few scenes are shot. The drone shots of the desert are indeed a delight to watch and would want anyone to experience the brilliance of the location. The cuts between a few shots are impressive too.

RGV’s ‘Climax’, starts on a solid note with some weird incidents happening around the desert. However, time seems to be the biggest setback here. Had there been no compromise on the duration of the movie, some unanswered questions might have been answered.

For instance, there is a weird noise that appears twice in the first 15 minutes or so. Later, it just vanishes. There’s no answer to a few questions like these and it is left to the audience, to interpret the answers.

After a gripping 20 minutes, the story is rightly set for the leads to exploring what exactly is happening. There are a few people in the lonely desert, but they don’t talk much. Their mannerisms have been rightly characterised and set the mood for what’s next.

However, the writing is a let-down as there’s no convincing reason as to why these ‘weird incidents’ are happening. The screenplay falls flat and had there been more explanation on the ‘why’ rather than showing the ‘how’, the film would have worked out for many. For the most part of the last 25 minutes, it is just Mia Malkova running around, figuring out what’s happening. Just like the audience.

Verdict: ‘Climax’ is a horror film that doesn’t scare you much, but try it for RGV’s flavour in it.
