After the blockbuster success of Ratsasan, Vishnu Vishal is back with Silukkuvarpatti Singam, an out and out rural comedy entertainer directed by Chella Ayyavu, an erstwhile associate of director Ezhil. The film has hit the screens today and here is our review:

Sathiyamoorthy (Vishnu Vishal) is an innocent constable, who gets nervous at difficult times and stays away from all the problems, fights that happen in his locality. In an unexpected turn of events, Sathi runs into 'Cycle' Shankar, a don but doesn't realise that he is the one being targeted by the Tamil Nadu Police. What happens when they are pitted against each other? Catch the film to know the answer to this question, which is treated in a light-hearted manner.

Vishnu Vishal shines with his character as a funny, innocent chap and he is believable. He gets to have multiple makeovers in the second half of the film and it looks interesting. Regina Cassandra looks pretty on screen and gets to fulfill the responsibilities of a commercial masala film heroine. 'Bigg Boss' Oviya adds to the glam factor with one song and few scenes.

The film has an long list of comedians inclusive of Yogi Babu, Anandaraj, Karunakaran, Mansoor Ali Khan, Livingston, Singamuthu, Manohar, and others. As expected, Yogi Babu scores with his well-timed counters and lightens up the mood of the film. Special mention to the costume designer and the thoughts that went behind designing Yogi Babu's T-shirts which had popular film phrases and dialogues.

Other comedians add to the play with their given screen time. One more appreciable aspect is that the film doesn't have any double meaning entendre in the name of comedy. The last twenty minutes of the film, especially the chasing sequences, help with the laughs.

It is a known fact that Silukkuvarpatti Singam is going to be a templated commercial comedy-drama that is catered to make the audience laugh throughout the film. However, the writing department could've focused more on the freshness of the jokes, as they fall flat in many places. Had the comedy sequences been more sensible and natural, Silukkuvarpatti Singam could have been a pakka commercial family entertainer. Most of the comical sequences are cliched and don’t add any entertainment value. The uninteresting romantic portion doesn’t help either. Having already seen Vishnu Vishal in a very similar type of film and with the templated screenplay pattern, the excitement or the entertainment factor is reduced.

Having said all these, the film might still turn out to be a fun roller coaster ride for the family audiences. Despite its templated treatment, the humour might work better for the targeted audience. Leon James songs and background score lack the punch and fall short. J Lakshman's visuals add to the colourful mood of the film.

Director Chella Ayyavu is pretty clear with his intentions of delivering a fun rural comedy entertainer. He should be appreciated for executing a film of this style, considering the number of actors involved inside a frame. One might just feel that Chella could have added more freshness in creating the comedy scenes to make SPS a completely fulfilling product.

Verdict: Silukuvarpatti Singam is a watchable template of rural comedy-drama that might satisfy its target audiences.
