Sigai is a Tamil thriller film starring Kathir who is fresh from Pariyerum Perumal's success. Though this movie was shot before Pariyerum Perumal, Sigai has had its release on January 9, 2019.

The movie doesn’t wait for the usual character intro's at the beginning, but the story starts right from the word ‘Go’. We are established that the character Prasath (Raj Bharath) is a pimp. Through him, we are slowly introduced to all other characters in the film including Buvana (Riythvika), Chetta (Rajesh Sarma), Nirmala (Meera Nair), Taxi Driver Subramani (Mayilsamy). All the characters are introduced one by one without any delay and commotion.

The slow narrative becomes serious when Nirmala goes missing and Santosh, one of her clients, is found murdered. From that moment on, the suspense is built steadily and nicely with some unexpected turn of events. As the main question keeps raging throughout, Sigai then becomes all about the revelation of many answers.

The placement of Kathir’s character Mathi Azhagan in the plot is at a crucial time and he only appears in the latter half of the film. Nevertheless, the actor aces his performance as Mathiazhagan and proves he is proficient. There are various other good performances including Meera Nair who at ease takes over her role doing her part well, Riythvika silently yet strongly dominates in her scenes. Raj Bharath who has only played character roles prior has perfectly delivered the tension and suspense well with a prominent role in Sigai. Rajesh Sarma and Mayilsamy have played their parts good and have supported the plot extremely well.

The dialogues make an impact time to time and it is delivered in a subtle and strong way. Certain scenes could have been trimmed and the flashback that involves Mathi, Santhosh and Nirmala could have been stronger. Even then, the 95 minutes runtime of the film provides the grip it has to and leaves you affected. In spite of not having any commercial compromises in the narrative, the screenplay could have been more engaging.

The music director, Ron Ethan Yohann, makes sure his music travels along neatly and builds the suspense it has to. Navin Kumar’s cinematography is subtle and satisfying. Director Jagadeesan Subu has rendered a thriller with nice twists and an important social message. Jagadeesan and Kathir have successfully delivered their experiment. Sigai is for sure a good attempt and is worth watching for many reasons.

Verdict: A watchable thriller, with an unexpected turn of events, supported by nice performances with an important message.
