Dhanush's latest is 'Karnan' which is directed by Mari Selvaraj and starring Lal, Rajisha Vijayan, Lakshmi Priya, Gouri K Kishan and Yogi Babu also in pivotal roles amidst others. Theni Easwar is the cinematographer and Santosh Narayanan is the music composer. Released on April 9, the film was critically acclaimed. Karnan also holds the record for the highest-grossing film of Dhanush's.
The film is said to be roughly based on the Kodiyankulam riots that happened in 1995. Kodiyankulam has been referred to as Podiyankulam in the movie and the events of the film are portrayed as having taken place in 1997.
A few have questioned as to why the story of the riots during the AIADMK regime has been portrayed as something that happened during the DMK regime, one among them being Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of DMK leader MK Stalin and the secretary of the DMK youth wing.
