With the lockdown prevailing in the entire country, theatres and malls have been shut down for over a month now. With the pandemic scenario reaching alarming levels in many cities, theatres will probably be closed for some more time, even after the lockdown is lifted. Meanwhile, the ongoing debate between ‘Movies in Theatres vs Movies in OTT’ is heating up.

Murali Rama Narayanan, from the esteemed production house Thenandal films, has released a new statement suggesting the council to implement a new policy, which is a win-win for all. In his statement, he has said: “At present, producers of Tamil films are in a situation where they are forced to release the movie online.”

“It is a difficult task for a small budget film producer to release his movie in a theatre, as the number of takers is less. It is the same scenario in the digital platform as well. Only big budget and movies with big stars are outrightly bought by OTT platforms. This situation has to change.”

“The council must discuss among themselves and the decision they take must benefit all the 1300 producers of the state.”

“For any big-budget movie an OTT platform premieres online, it should also release 5 small budget films. The big-budget producer should ensure this happens. This way, if 25 big movies release online, 125 small films will also release. We, as a council must take such a decision so that everyone, including the small film producers, is benefitted.”
