KV Anand made his presence felt both as an cinematographer and a director. He began to work as a freelance photographer for magazines when he initially started out. Later, he assisted celebrated cinematographer PC Sreeram as an assistant cinematographer in several films including 'Gopura Vasalile', 'Amaran' and 'Thevar Magan'.
When director Priyadarshan asked cinematographer PC Sreeram to work on the film 'Thenmavin Kombathu', the latter recommended KV Anand as he was busy. Mohanlal played the protagonist. KV Anand won the National Award for Best Cinematography for his very first film itself. He continued to work with director Priyadarshan on 'Minnaram', 'Chandralekha' and ‘Doli Saja Ke Rakhna', the latter happens to be the debut film of Jyothika.
He made his debut as a cinematographer in Tamil with the film 'Kadhal Desam' which became a super hit. He took on the directorial avatar with ‘Kana Kanden’. Ayan with Suriya was one of the biggest hits of the latter’s career. Jiiva’s Ko too made a great impact.
