Theatre owners were up in arms with Suriya’s decision to release Jyothika’s Ponmagal Vandhal on OTT directly since they felt it affected their business. They even threatened to boycott films of the stars of the family. However, Suriya went ahead and released the film on Amazon Prime.

Close to two months of the film’s release on Prime, theatre owners are firm in their decision to boycott. Began Paneerselvam, General Secretary Tamil Nadu Theatre Association who is also the proprietor of Rohini Cinemas, “People like to see films in theatres. That’s what gives them satisfaction. For now, they can see on OTT but it is not a permanent solution. Films that released on OTT have been largely unsuccessful. People aren't in favour of OTT.”

Coming to the matter at hand, he said, “When they decided to release films on OTT without caring about our livelihood, we told them to continue releasing them in OTT only. We didn’t tell them we won’t give them theatres. Let Sivakumar family release their films on such platforms only. There is no change in our decision.”

During the course of the interview, he also alleged that theatres have lost to the tune of Rs 1,500 crore.

With Suriya up with a big release like Soorarai Pottru, we hope the situation is resolved amicably soon.
