Kannan was an assistant director in movies who has also worked in the upcoming film Annadurai starring Vijay Antony. He had been staying in a house in Kaikankuppam, Valasaravakkam with an assistant director Karthikeyan and four others.

Reportedly, Kannan was asleep while Karthikeyan had been watching TV. Kannan, due to his sleep getting disturbed, asked his friend to reduce the volume. After a disagreement that followed, it became a scuffle between the two which ended in Kannan falling unconscious after Karthikeyan shoved him.

Kannan was taken to a nearby hospital and after receiving aid, they returned home and Kannan slept again. However, Karthikeyan was shocked in the morning to find Kannan dead in his sleep. He immediately surrendered to the police. An investigation is going on to find out what happened exactly.
