A couple of weeks ago, actor Vijay was directed to pay a fine of Rs.1 Lakh by the Madras High Court in a case of paying entry tax for his imported Rolls Royce Ghost car that was said to be purchased by the actor in the year 2011-12.

The actor had then filed a Writ of Mandamus seeking a court ruling ordering the TN Govt and concerned Government departments to restrain from collecting Entry Tax for his imported Rolls Royce Ghost car. The writ petition which was dismissed by Justice Subramaniam, had been pending for nine years. The judge also criticised the actor for filing the petition to "avoid" paying the tax. He further said that paying tax is one's duty and not like donating an amount on their will.

The judge had ordered the actor to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh in addition to paying the entire entry tax for the car and said that the actor is expected to “pay tax promptly and punctually” and should not remain a mere “reel life hero.” Hurt by these remarks, Vijay moved the High Court, not to challenge the payment of entry tax, but to get the harsh remarks against him expunged and to set aside the Rs 1 lakh fine. “Learned judge has cast aspersions on him (Actor Vijay) by labelling him as an anti-national and has cast aspersions on the whole acting community,” the actor’s counsel argued in court in July.

Following this, a two-judge bench of Justices M Duraiswamy and R Hemalatha stayed the previous order and also set aside the Rs 1 lakh fine, only asking the actor to pay the entry tax. Subsequently, an appeal was filed in the Chennai High Court on behalf of actor Vijay objecting to only certain areas which the court had recorded in its judgment. When the case came up for hearing again today, Vijay's side argued that the single judge's comment had personally offended him.

Vijay's argument also added the car was bought with hard earned money and not only in his case but also in the case of actors Dhanush and Surya the personal attacks were unnecessary. The judge adjourned the case without mentioning the date.
